New York : The Sultanate of Oman on Wednesday participated in the joint ministerial meeting between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and the French Republic, held in New York on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Foreign Minister, underlined the strength of the longstanding friendly relations between the Sultanate of Oman and France, which are built on the foundations of trust and mutual respect.

He noted the significant development this partnership has witnessed in recent years in the fields of security, trade and cultural exchange. He emphasised the importance of building on this momentum to enhance joint GCC-French cooperation in a manner that serves mutual interests.

Sayyid Badr also addressed the Palestinian cause as an urgent priority, appreciating the role undertaken by both France and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in their joint presidency of the summit dedicated to the two-state solution.

He affirmed that restoring the credibility of the peace process requires concrete, practical steps that put an end to the cycle of violence, ensure the protection of civilians, and open a genuine political horizon that guarantees the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state.

Sayyid Badr voiced Oman’s appreciation for France’s recognition of the right of the Palestinians to establish their independent state, calling on the international community to confront the grave violations perpetrated by the Israeli government against the Palestinians.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces pushed towards the heart of Gaza City on Wednesday, placing at risk the lives of Palestinians who had stayed put in hopes that growing pressure on Israel for a ceasefire would mean they would not lose their homes. — ONA
