JEDDAH: A delegation from the Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC), led by Prof Rashid bin Hamad al Balushi, Chairman of the Commission, participated in the Emergency Meeting convened by the Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) at the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah. The meeting addressed the grave human rights and humanitarian consequences arising from Israeli aggression against Qatar.

In his opening statement, Prof Al Balushi underscored the necessity of upholding justice and peace, and called for the full implementation of the resolutions of the recent Arab-Islamic Summit in Qatar as a practical framework for collective action to protect civilians and safeguard human dignity.

He stressed that the silence of the international community in the face of such violations emboldens their continuation and worsens their impact, calling for effective, coordinated measures at the human rights, legal and diplomatic levels to ensure accountability and prevent impunity in line with international humanitarian law and relevant conventions.

The statement also highlighted the importance of strengthening collaboration among national human rights institutions in OIC member states and intensifying communication with relevant United Nations bodies to expedite humanitarian assistance, create conditions for a ceasefire, alleviate civilian suffering and protect essential facilities and infrastructure.

The meeting included detailed discussions on the evolving situation and its humanitarian repercussions, and examined possible legal and diplomatic measures to support Qatar. The aim was to develop a unified human rights position with urgent priorities to be advanced in international fora, including the Human Rights Council and the Security Council.

The Oman delegation included Minister Plenipotentiary Aqeel bin Alawi Ba Omar and Abdulaziz bin Ali al Saadi, Director of the Legal Affairs Department at the Oman Human Rights Commission.
