Muscat: The Environment Authority (EA) has announced Phase Four of the Plastic Shopping Bag Ban Decision 8/2024 from January 1, 2026.

The decision applies to shops related to building materials and construction, dates, utensils, animal feed, grains, agricultural materials, and pesticides, repair of water filters, ice cream and sweet corn and nuts, mainteance and sale of water pumps, juices, car pumps,  mishaks, irrigation systems, mills, nurseries and agricultural supplies, honey, pet related food and birds, fish and animals.

The EA Decision is a significant regulation issued in Oman to ban the use of all kinds of plastic shopping bags in a phased manner by 2027. There will be a complete ban on the use of plastic bags from next year, as part of the plans to reduce plastic pollution in alignment with Oman's Vision 2040 sustainability goals.

It specifically prohibits companies, establishments, and individuals from using single-use plastic shopping bags that are less than 50 mm thick.

Violators face administrative fines ranging from RO50 to 1,000, which will be doubled in case of repeat offenses.
