MUSCAT: Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, received Eng Yacine El Mahdi Oualid, Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, at the ministry's headquarters on Sunday.

The meeting commenced with a welcoming address from Dr Al Habsi, in which he underscored the paramount importance of sustaining collaborative endeavours between the two nations across agricultural, fisheries and water resource domains. He commended the profound depth of Omani-Algerian relations and the continuous positive evolution they are witnessing.

For his part, Eng Yacine El Mahdi Oualid, Algeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, conveyed his profound appreciation for the Sultanate of Oman and the significant accomplishments it has achieved within its agricultural and fisheries wealth sectors. He affirmed his nation's steadfast commitment to reinforcing the frameworks of cooperation and capitalising on the exchange of specialised expertise in the fields of agriculture, maritime fishing, and rural development.

The proceedings featured a visual presentation entitled 'Achievements and Milestones in the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources Sectors for 2024,' which delineated the most prominent projects and initiatives executed by Oman throughout the year. A subsequent presentation on food security in Oman was delivered by Eng Abdulaziz al Shukaili, Director of the Investment Department, detailing the nation's concerted efforts to fortify its food security infrastructure and ensure the sustainability of vital supply chains.

The meeting further included a joint visual presentation exploring 'Omani-Algerian Cooperation Opportunities in the Agricultural Sector.'

During this segment, a panel of experts from both delegations provided specialised insights into prospective investment domains. These encompassed advanced knowledge in desert soil management, precision agriculture, date palm cultivation, tropical fruit production, alongside opportunities for developing the horticulture sector and driving agricultural management and transformation.

The meeting culminated in a comprehensive dialogue during which both parties deliberated upon future horizons for cooperation.

They explored concrete avenues for bolstering joint initiatives and enhancing coordination in research and technical programmes, all aimed at contributing to the realisation of sustainable food security and the progressive development of these vital sectors in both nations. — ONA
