ALGIERS: The Sultanate of Oman and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in agriculture, fisheries and food security, alongside Oman’s participation as a guest of honour at the International Fisheries and Aquaculture Exhibition ‘SIPA 2025’ in Oran.

The meeting between Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, and Yassine El Mahdi Oualid, Algeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, focused on advancing joint initiatives in desert agriculture, digital transformation in the agricultural sector, marine fishing and value-added industries. Both sides stressed the importance of collaboration in research, innovation and investment to achieve sustainable food security and ensure the responsible management of natural resources.

Dr Al Habsi highlighted Oman’s success in developing the blue economy, emphasising initiatives such as aquaculture, modern fish ports, and e-marketing platforms like Bahar that link producers to global markets. He noted that Oman’s participation in SIPA 2025 reflects the depth of Omani–Algerian relations and its growing regional role in sustainable fisheries management.

The exhibition, held under the slogan “Innovation and Knowledge,” gathers representatives from more than 25 countries and 35 emerging institutions, serving as a platform for knowledge exchange and showcasing innovative technologies in marine fishing and aquaculture. Oman’s presence has drawn attention to its integrated value chains in the fisheries sector, which include fish farming, processing industries and logistics infrastructure.

For his part, Minister Oualid praised Oman’s pioneering achievements in the sustainable management of marine resources and the aquaculture sector, underscoring that selecting Oman as the guest of honour symbolises Algeria’s appreciation of Oman’s experience and expertise in the blue economy.

The two ministers also discussed enhancing bilateral training, technical cooperation and exchange of expertise between their respective institutions. Both expressed optimism that this partnership would pave the way for new investment opportunities and collaborative research projects benefiting both nations.

The Omani delegation included senior officials from the ministry, the Ambassador of Oman to Algeria and representatives from key Omani fisheries and agricultural institutions. The meeting reaffirmed the two countries’ shared vision of achieving sustainable development and greater economic diversification through innovation and knowledge-driven collaboration. — ONA
