THE HAGUE: The Sultanate of Oman, in a joint statement on behalf of 23 countries, stressed the need to stop violations related to the use of chemical materials in conflict zones, and to adhere to the provisions of international law and the Chemical Weapons Convention, during the proceedings of the 30th session of the Conference of the States Parties held in The Hague.

The statement, delivered by Ambassador Shaikh Dr Abdullah bin Salem al Harthy, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and its Permanent Representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, said that the participating countries condemn the use of chemical substances and riot control agents in the military operations carried out by Israel against civilians in Palestine and Lebanon, stressing that these practices are a clear violation of international law and the provisions of the Chemical Weapons Convention, and emphasising the need for Israel to comply with the resolutions of the UN Security Council and the ruling of the International Court of Justice.

The statement also condemned the Israeli attacks targeting government lands and facilities in the Syrian Arab Republic.

Regarding the Palestinian and Syrian issues, the statement stressed the importance of the Technical Secretariat following up on the field situation and investigating related violations, while welcoming the positive developments in the Syrian chemical file and the existing cooperation between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. - ONA
