Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman and the capital Muscat, continue to be ranked among the safest countries in the world, Numbeo mid-year report said.

Globally, the capital Muscat is among the safest only behind Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Doha, Ras al Khaimah, Sharjah, and Taipei.

Incidentally, six of the top eight cities are in the GCC.

The report sees a 'very low' probability of crime, housebreaks, car thefts, things stolen from the car, attacks, physical attacks because of your skin color, ethnic origin, gender, or religion, and problems related to violent crimes such as assault and armed robbery.

In the capital, Muscat, it is considered very safe to walk alone during daylight and 'highly safe' to walk alone at night.

According to travel advisories of various countries, including the Foreign Ministry, Oman is one of the safest countries in the world, with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. "However, when visiting anywhere, you should take basic safety precautions such as keeping passports, money, and other valuables in a closed bag or a safe at the hotel," advisories say.

According to residents and travel operators, some of the best places to walk at night in Muscat are the Muttrah Waterfront, Shatti al Qurum, Qurum Natural Park, Seeb Waterfront, Al Hail Waterfront, Al Mouj Waterfront, and Nizwa's old Al Aqr district.
