As part of the Summer Sports Days 2025, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth organised the ‘Let’s Walk’ initiative on Thursday at Muscat Grand Mall, attracting around participants from across the community. The event aimed to encourage walking as a simple, effective way to maintain physical and mental well-being.

Ahlam al Khamisi, Physical Activity Specialist and event supervisor, said the initiative was designed to motivate mall-goers and company employees to adopt regular physical activity. The event welcomed hiking teams, athletes, senior citizens and children, highlighting walking as a beneficial activity for fitness, mental comfort and community bonding. “Through this initiative, we aim to embed a walking culture across society, making it accessible to all and strengthening social ties,” she said.

This year marked the second edition of the initiative, following the success of the first held at Muscat Mall, which drew over 400 participants from 15 entities. Moving the event to midweek and collaborating with Muscat Grand Mall allowed organisers to adapt indoor walking routes, a practical adjustment given high outdoor temperatures and limited suitable outdoor spaces. Al Khamisi added, “Future editions aim to expand across other governorates, making walking a cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle nationwide.”

Participation extended beyond individuals, with several institutions, sports clubs and community groups joining. Among them was the Omani Women’s Association.

Ghadir al Zadjali, Vice-Chair of the Association’s Sports Committee, said: “Walking is one of the simplest and most beneficial activities, and our participation reflects our commitment to promoting sports and encouraging exercise across society.”

The event also included side activities such as raffles, creating a lively atmosphere for families and participants of all ages.

Al Zadjali emphasised the Association’s role in supporting women’s engagement in sports, including training courses, hiking trips, fitness programmes and trainer development initiatives. She concluded: “We hope our involvement raises awareness about the importance of physical activity, especially among women, benefiting the health of the entire community.”

Ayoob al Raisi, head of the Oman Mountain Champions Hiking Team, praised the initiative’s societal impact. “Events like ‘Let’s Walk’ restore energy and vitality, motivating people to move instead of remaining sedentary,” he said, highlighting the positive health and social benefits of such initiatives. “We hope these events continue regularly to enhance the health and well-being of the community.”
