MUSCAT, AUG 28

The Oman Basketball Association (OBA) is organising on Friday a specialised training workshop for the coaches and assistants of the Basketball Athlete Preparation Centres. The event is taking place at the secondary hall of the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher, with the participation of 14 national coaches overseeing the seven centres spread across several governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.

This workshop comes as part of the Athlete Preparation System Development Project launched by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY) under the slogan “From Exploration to Achievement.”

The initiative aims to raise performance efficiency, enhance the effectiveness of the centres’ operations, and prepare a qualified generation of athletes capable of competing at higher levels.

GOALS AND THEMES OF THE WORKSHOP

Now in its fourth edition, the workshop continues a series of previous sessions designed to unify curricula and modern coaching methods for youth players. It is being conducted by Syrian coach Abdullah Mohammed Fouad Hashim, general coach of the preparation centres.

The first theme covers the annual plan of the centres, their components, and the mechanism for setting objectives and identifying key skills in training units, along with guidelines for session preparation and linking them to the overall plan. The third theme focuses on practical applications in designing training units, while the fourth highlights the main challenges faced by the centres and strategies to improve training quality. The workshop concludes with a general discussion session and knowledge exchange.

SUSTAINABILITY OF TRAINING AND UNIFIED EFFORTS

Abu Bakr bin Ahmed al Jahwri, OBA Vice-President and Head of the Centres’ Supervisory Committee, stressed that this workshop reflects a commitment to continuous development. It provides a motivating training environment based on clear scientific curricula, enhancing the coaches’ capabilities and helping them refine the skills of young male and female players at early stages. He added that the centres have directly contributed to broadening the game’s base, gaining a noticeable presence across the governorates, and successfully producing standout players who have gone on to join clubs and national teams.

Al Jahwri explained that there are currently seven centres operating this season, distributed across four governorates, and hosted by clubs such as Seeb, Sohar, Nizwa, Al Bashayer, Salalah, and Al Amerat, in addition to a girls’ centre at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex in Bausher. These centres include boys and girls born between 2010 and 2012 and are led by carefully selected national coaches. He emphasised that the centres have played a vital role in expanding basketball’s reach within the Sultanate of Oman and have contributed to producing a number of talented players who have enriched both clubs and national teams.
