

MUSCAT: The Royal Oman Police (ROP) have called motorists for prioritising safety and security of oneself as well as of others while visiting Dhofar Governorate during the Khareef Dhofar Season as chances of accidents are high due to climatic conditions.
Drizzles, reduced visibility, night driving, driving when fatigued, reckless driving and using mobile phone while driving have all taken a toll on the lives of many, according to the ROP.
"The Khareef Dhofar Season in Dhofar Governorate is a magical time when the mountains turn green, the skies pour gently and families head out to enjoy nature at its finest. However, accidents and other mishaps due to recklessness of may be one person, are seemed turning happy occasions into tragic moments", an official from the ROP said.
"Every year during this season, we witness heartbreaking tragedies on the roads to Salalah, especially the stretch from Adam to Haima and Thamrait. This route, while scenic, is also incredibly dangerous. Motorists need to take extra caution while driving through this areas, chances of accidents are high".
"Most of the accidents on this road are preventable and when accidents happen, timely medical care can be a challenge depending on the location. Sometimes, the only hope is an airlift and unfortunately, not everyone makes it in time", he adds.
Some tips for the drivers to follow are:
1. The particular stretch of the road is mostly single-lane with no proper dividers.
2. Since speed limits are not clearly enforced, it is always advisable to maintain a moderate speed.
3. Avoid driving at night and never attempt to drive while tired.
4. Be aware that camels are frequently known to cross the roads. Drivers should always be on the lookout for them.
5. Sandstorms, unpredictable weather, and even cyclones are reported in these areas.
6. Even if one strictly adheres to all traffic safety regulations, it is safer to consider travelling by bus or flight.
