Muscat: The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued multiple alerts as unstable weather conditions are expected to affect several parts of the Sultanate today.
According to the latest forecasts, localised convective clouds are expected to develop over parts of the Al Hajar Mountains and adjacent areas during the afternoon, potentially leading to isolated thundershowers accompanied by strong downdrafts.
Rainfall and thunderstorm activity
The CAA has warned of scattered rainfall of varying intensity, which may be accompanied by occasional thunderstorms. Affected areas include the governorates of Musandam, Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, Al Dakhiliyah, North and South Al Batinah, and North and South Al Sharqiyah, particularly over mountainous areas. Rainfall is forecast to range between 5 mm and 25 mm.
The weather alert is in effect from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm today.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant due to the potential impact of:
- Flash floods in wadis and low-lying areas
- Strong downdraft winds, ranging from 20 to 45 knots
- Poor horizontal visibility due to dust and rain
- Localised hailstorms in some areas
Wind and dust activity
Winds descending from convective clouds (downdrafts) are expected to be active across a broad area stretching from Al Dhahirah to Al Dakhiliyah and into parts of Al Sharqiyah. These winds may result in flying debris and significant visibility reduction in desert and open areas.
Visibility and fog formation
Additionally, the CAA has indicated the likelihood of low clouds and fog formation during the late night and early morning hours over parts of Dhofar, Al Wusta, and South Al Sharqiyah governorates.
General forecast summary
Coastal areas: Clear to partly cloudy
Interior: Mainly clear, with chances of afternoon cloud development and isolated thundershowers over the Hajar range
Desert and open areas: Potential for rising dust reducing visibility
Mountains: Likelihood of thunderstorms and downdraft winds
The public is advised to follow official updates and avoid crossing wadis during rainfall. Motorists should exercise caution due to reduced visibility and slippery roads.
