Is divorce valid in Oman if husband sends a message via social media?

Muscat: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) has confirmed that divorce issued through modern digital platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, and similar applications is considered valid.

Meanwhile, the SJC said the divorce declaration can be considered valid if it is clearly and definitively proven that the statement originated from the husband.

This clarification was highlighted in judicial ruling No. 310/2020, which affirms that electronic means do not invalidate the legal effect of a divorce declaration when the sender’s identity is established beyond doubt.

However, the Supreme Judicial Council underscored in a statement the role of marriage, which is described as a “sacred bond and a documented contract built on love and compassion between spouses,” emphasising that it carries a “great responsibility” as the cornerstone of a stable family.
