Sultan’s camel festival kicks off in Barka

Muscat: The Sultan’s Cup Festival 2025 for camel racing will launch today, Sunday morning, at the Al Fulaij Track in the Wilayat of Barka in Al Batinah South Governorate.


The festival supported by Royal Court Affairs represented by the Royal Camel Corps (RCC) in the corporation with Oman Camel Racing Federation (OCRF).


The final camel race for the season 2024-25 will feature 77 races across various camel categories.


The opening day, April 6, will be 32 races for the ‘Hagayeg’ category, two years old, for 4 km. 23 races will be in the morning with cash prizes for the top ten.


In the afternoon, there will be nine main races with cars and four icons as prizes for the winner and cash prizes for the top 10.


The RCC recently announced to purchase of wins camel in the final day of the competitions. The RCC has the right to keep the purchased camel with its current owner or to give it to another trainer.


On the other hand, RCC organised qualifying traditional race “Ardah” on Sutarday at the Al Fulaij Track in Barka with participant of more than 100 camels from varies area of Oman. The race was featuring competing of two camels only in each race for 400 metres, the organising communities qualified the top six camels with the best time to compete again during the final ceremony of the festival.


Accompanying activities


As part of the accompanying events, RCC established a dedicated festival illage featuring a variety of zones, activities, and competitions.


The village includes a sports arena, an open plaza, a cultural stage, and a traditional Bedouin tent.


One of the most exciting highlights will be the camel-back handball competition, held in the sports arena, showcasing a unique blend of sport and heritage.


The open plaza will host a series of engaging events, including a reenactment of the Bedouin caravan, traditional musical performances such as the Hamasiyya art, as well as various interactive competitions for visitors.


Bedouin tent will feature an array of heritage arts and performances, including Al Wanah, Al Tariq Al Taghrood, and Al Hambel.


In an effort to support local entrepreneurship, the RCC is providing opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and home-based businesses to showcase and market their products within the festival village.
