Oman’s electricity output rises 7.6%

MUSCAT: Oman’s total electricity production grew by 7.6% in 2024, reaching 48,452.7 gigawatt-hours (GWh) compared to 45,012.9 GWh in 2023, according to preliminary data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


The highest electricity output was recorded in the governorates of North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah, where production increased by 6.4% to 30,253.2 GWh. However, Muscat saw a significant drop of 19.4%, producing only 486.9 GWh by the end of the year. In contrast, Dhofar Governorate experienced an 11.9% increase, with total output reaching 5,679.7 GWh.


Electricity production also grew in the Al Sharqiyah North and South governorates, rising 7.2% to 10,609.4 GWh. Meanwhile, Al Wusta Governorate recorded a sharp 24.5% decline, producing 169.6 GWh, whereas Musandam Governorate saw a 6.6% increase, reaching 503.8 GWh.


The net electricity production, which includes purchases by Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and Rural Areas Electricity Company, increased by 7.2% to 46,813 GWh by the end of 2024.


In addition to electricity production, the statistics revealed that Oman’s total water production remained largely unchanged, reaching 520.37 million cubic metres by the end of 2024, compared to 520.36 million cubic metres in 2023. — ONA
