MUSCAT: As the holy month of Ramadhan unfolds, mass Iftar gatherings have become a defining feature across Oman. These communal meals, held at mosques, public spaces and business compounds, bring together people from all walks of life, fostering a sense of unity, generosity and shared devotion.
Among the many such gatherings, the daily Iftar at Muttrah Souq has emerged as a remarkable initiative, drawing widespread attention. Organised by labourers, employers and local benefactors, the initiative feeds nearly 1,000 people each evening — amounting to an estimated 30,000 Iftars over the course of the month.
The event serves as a vital support system for travellers, daily wage workers and individuals unable to reach home in time for Iftar. The central location allows passersby to join in, strengthening the communal spirit of the occasion.
The Iftar kits — consisting of dates, fruits and laban — are generously provided by workers from the souq, while Suhoor meals, featuring biryani and other traditional dishes, are sponsored by a local NGO. Volunteers play a key role in organising and distributing the food, ensuring that everyone who arrives is served.
"For more than a decade, we have been offering dates, water, juice and laban to hundreds of passersby daily. This is made possible through the generous support of souq traders and small-scale vendors," said Abdul Navas Kasargod, a long-time volunteer.
As Ramadhan progresses, the number of attendees at the Muttrah Souq Iftar continues to grow, along with contributions from local businesses and individuals eager to support the cause. The outpouring of generosity highlights the deep-rooted tradition of charity and community service during the holy month.
Ramadhan is not just a time for fasting and prayer — it is a season of giving, reflection and renewal. The mass Iftars at Muttrah Souq stand as a powerful reminder of the values of compassion and unity, inspiring people to extend their generosity beyond Ramadhan and into everyday life.
