MUSCAT: Oman and Cyprus have signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance cooperation in maritime affairs and mutually recognize maritime certificates. The agreements were signed by Eng Said bin Hamoud al Maawali, Oman’s Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, and Marina Hatgimanolis, Cyprus' Deputy Minister of Maritime Transport.
The first MoU focuses on strengthening maritime collaboration while adhering to international regulations. It includes cooperation on maritime safety, pollution prevention, ship registration, piracy prevention, and climate change mitigation through reduced emissions. The agreement also promotes the exchange of expertise in maritime education and training.
The second MoU ensures the mutual recognition of maritime certificates for seafarers, aligning with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). This ensures that Omani and Cypriot maritime professionals meet global competency standards.
These agreements aim to enhance maritime integration between the two nations, supporting strategic interests in the shipping sector. — ONA
