Muscat: Oman is making significant strides to boost its aviation sector, focusing on competitiveness, investment opportunities, and sustainability. Key initiatives include digital transformation, infrastructure upgrades, and strategic planning to position Oman as a regional aviation hub.

A cornerstone project is the shift towards digital transformation, aimed at providing more reliable data to airport managers, airlines, and air traffic controllers. This will not only improve operational efficiency but also enable better environmental impact assessments.

Recent developments include the inauguration of the southern runway at Muscat International Airport, increasing capacity to handle larger aircraft like the Airbus A380. These advancements highlight Oman’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices to meet global standards.

The National Aviation Strategy 2040, unveiled in September, emphasizes strengthening the economy through aviation while encouraging investments in new airline ventures. It also focuses on restructuring airspace and optimizing flight paths to enhance accessibility and reduce operational costs. Mohammed Ali Mgalles, Chief Technology Officer of CGX AERO, explained, “Digital transformation reduces reliance on paper and shortens data upload times, aligning with plans to optimize airspace. Oman’s strategic location between Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North Africa makes it an attractive hub for airlines.”

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has also extended the deadline for bids on a new Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Muscat International Airport. Scheduled for completion by mid-2025, this state-of-the-art facility will accommodate aircraft, including the Airbus A380, meeting the demands of a recovering global aviation market.

This project, part of Oman’s vision to diversify its economy, aims to position the nation as a key regional hub for aircraft maintenance, leveraging its strategic location at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe.

By prioritizing innovation and sustainability, Oman is poised to become a leader in regional aviation while fostering economic growth and global connectivity.
