SALALAH: Dhofar Municipality, in cooperation with government and private companies, endeavours to develop new tourist sites, improve facades and implement a number of road projects in Dhofar Governorate in coincidence with the Khareef Dhofar Season 2024.


Dr Ahmed bin Mohsin al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, said: “The Khareef Dhofar Season 2023 achieved great success in terms of activating tourism and commercial activities with the number of visitors to the season reached about 1 million visitors recording an increase of 18.4 per cent compared to 2022 while the volume of spending exceeded RO 100 million."


Al Ghassani said that the current edition of Khareef Dhofar Season is expected to see an increase in visitor number by 10 to 15 per cent compared to the previous edition whereas spending is expected to reach RO 115 million.


The new sites are undergoing renovation to function as year-round tourist attractions including Return of the Past, Ateen Square, Up Town and Rathath Boulevard. He said that there is a plan to open these sites in two phases, the first of which will operate for 6 months while the second will operate for a longer period.


Al Ghassani affirmed that the government has invested in developing Dhofar Governorate in various aspects. The development process included improving traffic flow and implementing several road projects with an allocated budget of RO 30 million for this year. This is in addition to two rainwater drainage projects and several projects for developing tourist sites, improving facades, and other development projects.


The governorate has an ambitious plan to implement several projects within the governorate that will be announced during the coming period most of which are related to infrastructure and expanding the road network in the different wilayats of the governorate with a special focus on improving the rainwater drainage network, supporting the development of some youth projects, among others.


The Chairman of Dhofar Municipality confirmed that the the governorate is working on several visions and strategies that will further stimulate growth in the commercial, economic and tourism sectors and open up new opportunities for small and medium enterprises and enhance investment in other sectors whether those related to the tourism sector or to the natural resources that distinguish the governorate. — ONA
