MUSCAT, MARCH 4

Seeking to support the growing small and medium enterprise (SME) community in the governorate, Dhofar Municipality allocated a total of RO 4 million in 353 contracts benefiting small businesses during 2023.

Mohammad al-Ghassani, Director of the SME Department in Dhofar Governorate, said the beneficiaries primarily included SMEs operating tourist sites and engaging in tourism-related activities during the khareef and winter holiday seasons in the governorate.

“These contracts helped stimulate the local economy, as well as sustain the growth of small and medium enterprises in the Governorate of Dhofar, given their pivotal role in the success of the various tourist seasons in Dhofar. Part of our objective was to affirm our confidence in SMEs as important players in driving the local economy, and providing an array of goods and services to the local community,” he stated.

The support packages, Al Ghassani said, have helped create a mix of full-time and part-time employment opportunities for local Omanis corresponding to the tourism season the beneficiary SMEs are actively engaged in. The contracts also helped create livelihoods for locals and bolster family incomes as well, he stated.

Several sectors witnessed significant growth due to the Municipality’s initiatives. As a result of support packages disbursed by the Municipality, local shops and stores experienced an expansion in both reach and customer base, contributing to a more vibrant local economy. Cafes and mobile food carts burgeoned as well, offering residents and visitors a wider spectrum of dining options.

The growth of businesses focusing on amusement facilities contributed to creating a family-centric environment and bolstering the region's tourism potential. Likewise, tech firms provided essential services and solutions, contributing to the overall development of the region. SMEs played a pivotal role in promoting sustainable practices and preserving Dhofar's breathtaking natural splendor.
