MUSCAT: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, in conjunction with the Omani Theatre Society, marked World Theatre Day at the College of Banking and Financial Studies in Muscat Governorate.

The event, under the sponsorship of Sayyid Said bin Sultan al Busaidy, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Culture, gathered various officials from the theatrical realm, including artists, playwrights, actors, writers, and critics.

The ceremony commenced with an address on the significance of World Theatre Day, delivered by a group of playwrights, among them Zaha Qadir, Khamis al Rawahi, Wafaa al Rashidiyah, and Zaher al Salami. They underscored the role of theatre in conveying messages and addressing humanity's issues, such as dialogue, freedom, peace, and coexistence.

An integral part of the celebration was the official announcement of a theatrical writing competition. Dr Imad al Shanfari, President of the Omani Theatre Society, elucidated the competition's criteria and adjudication process. Text submissions are scheduled to commence in April, spanning four months, with three winners to be selected. Prizes include RO 3,000 for the first place, RO 2,000 for the second place, and RO 1,000 for the third place,

with winning entries set to be published.

Attendees were treated to a captivating theatrical performance titled 'Macbethian Suffering,' authored by Osama bin Zayed al Shaqsi and starring artist Saleh bin Zaal. The production artfully encapsulated the essence of the playwright's personal struggles and creative expression on stage, resonating with audiences.

The Omani Theatre Society announced plans for the second theatre festival, slated for September at the Madinat Al Irfan Theatre. The call for script submissions will open next month, promising a vibrant platform for theatrical innovation and artistic expression. - ONA
