SALALAH, DEC 19

The Directorate General of Education in Dhofar Governorate hosted on Tuesday a commemorative event marking the International Day of the Arabic Language at Sultan Qaboos Youth Complex for Culture and Entertainment in Salalah.

The event, underscoring the Arabic language's pivotal role in preserving Arab heritage and instilling Arab culture across generations, was held under the auspices of Dr Mezoun bint Bakheet bin Said al Shahri, Acting Director General.

Dr Fatima al Ghassani, Director of the Department of Educational Supervision in Dhofar Governorate, spoke on the significance of the International Day of the Arabic Language, which falls on December 18 every year. Acknowledging the United Nations General Assembly's resolution No. 3190 of 1973 that designated this date for the annual celebration, she emphasised the global recognition of Arabic as one of the official languages of the United Nations.

Reflecting on the richness of the Arabic language in its diverse forms, Dr Al Ghassani highlighted the critical roles that Arabic language teachers play inside and outside the classroom. Emphasising their responsibility to adopt modern methods and strategies, she underscored the importance of fostering a positive learning environment that aligns with students' needs, abilities, and motivations.

The celebration also featured a literary session, where Dr Jameela bint Salem bin Abboud al Jaadiyah, Assistant Professor at the College of Arts and Applied Sciences, presented on "Poetic Workmanship Skills in Arabic Language Curricula." Additionally, Ishraq bint Abdullah bin Faris al Nahdi, Chairperson of the Eshraqat Cultural Council, shared her experience of writing and publishing a collective book titled "Bint Al-Baleed." The event concluded by recognising 23 outstanding students in the Arabian Knights competition, specifically in storytelling. This gathering served as a platform to celebrate the enduring significance of the Arabic language and its vibrant contributions to literature and culture.
