MUSCAT: The Minister of Energy and Minerals, Eng Salem bin Nasser al Aufi, confirmed that the Sultanate of Oman is steadily advancing towards producing no less than 30% of electricity or consuming electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030.

He added that the oil and gas sectors are currently working to stop routine burning operations, while some industrial areas and cities are seeking environmentally friendly energy alternatives, giving more competitiveness to local products in global markets.

Al Aufi pointed out that studies are being conducted on alternative energy, its costs, and the changes factories need to adopt modern technology to keep up with it, clarifying that the sectors producing carbon emissions by around 95% are industry, electricity production, oil, gas, transportation, and others.

He explained that some governmental institutions have made efforts as part of Oman's plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, while others are still searching for projects to reduce carbon emissions. Several electricity production projects have been announced, including the Manah 1 and Manah 2 stations, preparations for the Ibri 3 station, in addition to announcing 5 new wind power stations: Dhofar 2 station, Sadah station, Duqm station, Mahout station, and Jalan Bani Bu Ali station. — ONA
