UNESCO includes 3 Omani cities in its Global Network of Learning Cities

Muscat: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced the addition of three Omani cities in the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities. They were Muscat (in the Governorate of Muscat), Nizwa (in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah) and Sur (in the South Al Sharqiyah Governorate).

The move took place within the context of a plan made by the Ministry of Education, represented by the Omani National Commission for Education, Culture and Science. The Ministry carried out the programme in partnership with the Ministry of Interior to promote Omani cities in the global arena.

The programme seeks to spread awareness about education for sustainable development in the local community, besides raising the Sultanate of Oman’s ranking in international indicators (including the Sustainable Development Goals—the SDG indicators).

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a virtual ceremony organized by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning. It is considered an acknowledgment of the efforts of the selected cities made to realize the lifelong learning principle.
