MUSCAT: In a strategic move to bolster its cargo capabilities, Oman Air has welcomed its first dedicated cargo aircraft, the 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF), in partnership with Boeing. This marks a significant milestone for the Muscat-based carrier, signaling its commitment to expanding in the air cargo logistics sector.

The decision comes on the heels of Oman Air Cargo witnessing a remarkable 42 per cent increase in cargo volume during the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. This surge is attributed to the carrier's passenger airplane fleet's capacity expansion. The 737-800BCF, with a freight capacity of up to 23.9 tonnes and a range of 3,750 km, is poised to contribute significantly to Oman Air's sustained capacity growth.

"The freighter will contribute to the growth of the air cargo logistics sector in Oman and beyond, will be based at our strategically located Muscat hub, and will enhance our ability to connect East and West," emphasized Oman Air. This move aligns with the airline's vision to strengthen connections and facilitate trade between regions.

Kate Schaefer, Vice President of Boeing Commercial Modifications, highlighted the importance of the 737-800BCF in complementing Oman Air's passenger fleet with dedicated cargo capacity. She expressed Boeing's honoUr in partnering with Oman Air Cargo to provide a proven and reliable freighter that meets the demands of an evolving air cargo landscape.

The 737-800BCF, built on an efficient and reliable platform, is designed for airlines responding to increased cargo demand, optimizing fleets, or replacing older freighters. Notably, it boasts up to 20 percent lower fuel use and CO2 emissions per tonne compared to the previous generation of standard-body freighters, aligning with sustainability goals.

The freighter conversion process was completed at Taikoo (Shandong) Aircraft Engineering Co Ltd (STAECO), underscoring the collaboration and global efforts involved in bringing this advanced cargo aircraft to fruition.

As Oman Air enhances its cargo capabilities, this development is poised to contribute significantly to the nation's economic status. The strategic positioning of the Muscat hub as a gateway between East and West will likely boost Oman's economic ties, creating opportunities for increased trade and positioning the country as a pivotal player in aerial tourism and logistics.
