The classification of the tropical system maintained its status as tropical cyclone Category 1 until Monday evening.

“We expect Tej to be downgraded to tropical storm by Monday night or Tuesday,” said the weather forecaster at National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre and Civil Aviation Authority.

During the last few hours some wilayats in Dhofar Governorate witnessed heavy rains and fresh winds. Weather charts analysis indicated that the tropical cyclone will continue to be downgraded to a tropical storm when it makes landfall through Al Mahra Governorate in Yemen on Monday night or Tuesday morning.

The National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Centre, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), affirmed that Tej is likely to relegate to a tropical storm during the coming 12 hours.

Wind speed around the centre of the cyclone currently ranges between 64 and 82 knots. Forecasts point to the fact that Tej is still heading towards the coasts of Dhofar Governorate and the Republic of Yemen (Al Mahra Governorate).

The eye is 250 km away from the city of Salalah, and the tropical condition is likely to cross over Yemen’s Al Mahra tonight or on Tuesday morning.

The coastal wilayats in Dhofar Governorate witnessed heavy rains and the flowing of wadis and the impact is expected to continue on Dhofar and southern parts of Al Wusta governorates as heavy rain (50-300 mm) with expected flow of wadis and fresh to severe blowing winds (40-70 knots).

Parts of the wilayats of Sadah, Shaleem, Rakhyout and Dhalkout in Dhofar Governorate witnessed rains of varying strength and the movement of the tropical cyclone intensified the local cloud formations over Al Hajar Mountains bringing rains in six governorates. The thunderstorm alert is on for the mountainous areas of South Al Batinah, North Al Batinah, Al Dakhiliyah, Al Buraimi, Al Dhahirah, North Al Sharqiyah governorates starting at 1 pm and is expected to continue until 10 pm.

The flow of cumulus rain clouds accompanying the tropical condition and rainfall of varying intensity accompanied by active winds in the coastal and mountainous areas of the Dhofar Governorate, which led to the flow of wadis.

The National Centre for Emergency Management requested the public to avoid venturing into the sea.
