Ramallah: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik sent a written message to President Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine, pertaining to bilateral relations between the two countries and means of enhancing them.


The message was handed over by Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidy, Foreign Minister, to the president at the Presidential Palace in Ramallah on Friday.


The minister conveyed the greetings and good wishes of His Majesty the Sultan to the president and the Palestinian people. The message reiterated Oman's unwavering support for the right of the Palestinian people to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with the two-state solution and the principle of land for peace.


President Mahmoud Abbas thanked His Majesty the Sultan and the Omani people for their continued support to the Palestinian people.


The meeting discussed developments in the region as well as the efforts being made to stop the escalation of violence and to push the international community to support efforts to resume the peace process.


The meeting was also attended by Khalid bin Hashel al Muslehi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Salem bin Habib al Amiri, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Oman in Ramallah; Palestine's Ziyad Abu Omar, Deputy Prime Minister for Diplomatic Affairs; and Dr Riyad al Maliki, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.


Later Sayyid Badr held talks with Dr Al Maliki.


The talks covered political developments in Palestine, means to revive the peace process and work towards the two-state solution, and what the international community should do to stop settlements and Israeli plans to annex parts of Palestinian territories. They discussed the necessity of preserving the historical, legal and religious status of the occupied city of Jerusalem, and supporting efforts aimed at obtaining the State of Palestine for full membership in the United Nations.


On the sidelines of the session, the Foreign Minister and his Palestinian counterpart signed an agreement between Oman and Palestine to set up a committee for consultation and bilateral cooperation.


Sayyid Badr also met Prime Minister of Palestine Mohammed Shtayyeh; Hussein al Sheikh, Chairman of the Palestinian General Authority for Civil Affairs, Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization; and Major General Majid Faraj, President of Palestinian General Intelligence Service.


The meetings dealt with bilateral relations between the two countries, exchanging visions and viewpoints on the latest developments in the Palestinian territories, and the Arab and international efforts in support of the Palestinian people in obtaining their legitimate rights by ending the occupation and establishing independent Palestine state with East Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with the principle of the two-state solution and the Arab Peace Initiative.
