The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) has called on companies and institutions in the private sector to manage and develop Al Mirani Fort in Muscat with the objective of stimulating cultural tourism and encouraging investments.
The fort in old Muscat overlooks the Sea of Oman and was the first where cannons were installed in Oman.
Al Mirani Fort existed prior to the Portuguese invasion and was later rebuilt by the Portuguese in 1587. MHT is looking to partner with private sector companies for managing and developing the fort, a statement said.
According to the ministry, competing companies must submit a study that proposes ways to market the fort commercially and culturally, ideas for cultural workshops and organising artistic and cultural events, and plans for various activities to revive the fort.
Competing companies must highlight the architectural uniqueness of the fort and involve the local community in various cultural and social events.
The deadline for submission of bids is April 13.
The ministry has been handing over management and maintenance of the nation’s historical forts and castles to the private sector —one of several initiatives outlined under Tanfeedh (the National Programme for Enhancing Economic Diversification) to encourage private investment in the tourism industry.
