The Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) announced that Arab Consumer Protection Week will begin from March 8 to 14. The Arab countries, represented by the respective authorities, unanimously agreed to start the week by shedding light on regional consumer issues.

CPA organised a press conference under the theme ‘The Small Consumer’ on Sunday to announce ‘Arab Consumer Protection Week’ and its accompanying activities.

Dr Khalid al Alawi, official spokesperson for the organising committee of the week-long activities, said, “In conjunction with the Arab Consumer Protection Week, CPA will implement a number of activities, the most prominent of which is the Arab Forum entitled ‘Small Consumer and sustainable consumption’ in addition to various awareness activities and programmes in the Sultanate of Oman’s governorates.” The Arab Forum will be held on Wednesday (March 8) under the auspices of Sayyid Mohammed bin Sultan al Busaidy, Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council. Chaired by the Sultanate of Oman, the forum will have representation from Arab countries. The idea is to share the Sultanate of Oman’s experience in consumer protection and its role in protecting small consumers.

The forum seeks to achieve several objectives, including identifying the reality of legislation for the small consumer, the role of legal regulations and legislation in providing protection from traditional and electronic commercial fraud cases and achieving sustainable consumption.

It will also review the media role and its impact in achieving awareness among small consumers and international experiences in the field and identify policies and efforts made by the Sultanate of Oman in achieving sustainable consumption for small consumers.

It will also look into practical and applicable proposals and recommendations that would raise awareness among small consumer segments and improve legislation to deal with their issues.

The forum will include some working papers. Dr Haitham Hassan Abdel-Salam, Director of Public Relations and Media at the Sudanese Standards and Meteorology Authority, will present a paper entitled ‘Awareness of the Small Consumer: The Future of a Nation.’ “The forum will look at different topics related to society and the small consumers,” Said Dr Mohammad al Araimi, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Arab Forum.

Al Araimi told Oman Observer, “We target the small consumers because they need to be supported. The more capable they are in dealing with consumer issues, a general awareness would be spread.”
