'Let’s enhance our IQ and EQ measures'

The benefits are far and wide for both IQ and EQ as they prove to be multi-faceted and multi-dimensional

IQ which stands for intelligence quotient is a measure of our logical, reasoning and analytical or problem solving abilities. Those with an average and above IQ are great critical thinkers and possess an intrinsic desire to achieve their goals usually driven by strong self-motivation.

From the onset, these people have excelled academically and exhibit a reasonably higher success rate in business and entrepreneurial endeavours. Open to new experiences and equipped with good memory skills, they will usually live a longer life due to their proficiencies in making better informed decisions.

It also means they are highly adaptable with a flexible mindset allowing them to accept and let go of things easier. Their insatiable curiosity warrants the asking of open-ended questions which stimulates interesting conversations. Einstein said “I have no special talents, I am only passionately curious.”

EQ which stands for emotional quotient is a measure of how we identify, understand and process the feelings and emotions of self and of others. Those who possess an average and higher EQ allows them to resolve conflicts with less aggression, conceding them to communicate more effectively all the while displaying an empathic and compassionate demeanour.

These people will naturally possess more self-awareness, owning the ability to introspect. They look outwards and inwards for deep connection. They possess a much more in tune agility to regulate their triggers and manage their stress levels with an even-keeled mind. They navigate and steer conversations to encompass everyone’s opinions, trying not to just have a biased view point.

They are effective leaders as they possess humility, optimism, adaptability and have a solid inner strength that keeps them sturdy especially during trying times.

The benefits are far and wide for both quotients as they prove to be multi-faceted and multi-dimensional. The main difference between the two quotients is that IQ is more logical, and analytical. It’s your ability to grasp complex ideas and solve problems. EQ is interpersonal and gives you the ability to recognise emotion in yourself and others, allowing that awareness to guide your decisions.

Here are some tips on how to develop your IQ:

- Memory enhancing games eg: jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, Suduko.

- Executive function cognitive activities eg: Scrabble, Pictionary, brain teasers.

- Learn a new skill eg: an instrument, a new language.

- Adopt the mindset of a life-long learner and study daily

Here are some tips on how to develop your EQ:

- Use more assertive communication eg: Voice your concerns, be more authentically you, say “no” more.

- Practise active listening eg: Take an observer’s position in a group of people holding no judgement, simply being neutral.

- Develop more self-awareness eg: Be more mindful, present and grateful.

- Learn to take criticism well and to stay motivated. Everyone has their own opinion which means nothing about you.

We are always at choice to enhance the quotients. When worked on, they tie in well to create a symbiotic, synchronistic bond which will render you to be an all-rounded, grounded human being.
