Muscat: A surgical team from the Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre (SQCCCRC), successfully performed a first-of-its-kind bladder cancer resection using 3D laparoscopic surgery, a highly safe technique that requires advanced laparoscopic skills.

The 3D laparoscopic technology allows surgeons to perform surgeries by making small incisions in the abdominal wall and inserting high-resolution medical cameras that transmit three-dimensional images. The new technology enables surgeons to perform operations using precise surgical tools and endoscopes without the need to make large incisions in the patient’s body thereby avoiding post-surgery complications.

Dr Hilal bin Ali al Rashdi, consultant urological oncology surgeon at SQCCCRC, explained that the surgical was able to eradicate bladder cancer using the 3D laparoscopic technique for the first time in the Sultanate of Oman. He added that this is a safe technology that reduces blood loss by performing surgery through small incisions that are easy to heal. Besides, the 3D laparoscopic technique minimizes the need for analgesic drugs and expedites the recovery of the patient after the operation.
