Spectacular opening for Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan inaugurated the fifth edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games which is underway in Konya, a city south of Ankara in Turkey’s Central Anatolia region.


The games conclude on August 18.


The Omani team delegation is taking part in the event comprising of 30 athletes among 5,000 athletes from 55 countries and competing in five games including athletics, cycling, swimming, shooting and weightlifting.


Oman national athletics team runner’s Barkat al Harthi won third place in the qualification race of 100m, while Mezon al Alawi participated in 800m race and won seventh place. Ali al Balushi was ranked sixth place for 100 metres race.


On the other hand, Oman shooting team (trap) begins their competitions today, Wednesday, with five shooters. There are 112 shooters from 21 countries taking part. They will also compete in five qualifications rounds including three rounds on Wednesday and two rounds on Thursday. Eight teams will advance to the final on Thursday.


The Oman shooting team is represented by men’s team including Salim al Nasiri, Abdullah al Mandhari and Hussein al Shahoumi, while women team includes Reem al Hosani, Fakhriya al Jahafi and the team coach Marco Conte.


The Oman national weightlifting and cycling teams arrived in Konya city on Tuesday to take part in the tournament.
