With khareef season round the corner, preparations in the Governorate of Dhofar for the season are in full swing after a gap of two years due to Covid-19.

Khareef usually extends from mid-June to end of September, and thus constitutes an important attraction, especially for the residents of the Arab region who experience hot weather during these months of summer.

With regard to the preparations by the authorities concerned, Dhofar Municipality indicated that it is in the process of developing two camping sites with distinctive designs. It said in a statement that it will equip the sites with entertainment facilities, camping umbrellas, road paths and parking lots in front of each camping unit. Yet, the date of the start of construction work at one of the two sites will be announced soon, while the second site will be constructed after evaluating the first one based on the opinion of the community.

The authorities in Dhofar held meetings to determine the extent of the readiness to receive the season.

In a joint meeting in April between Dhofar Governorate Office, Dhofar Municipality and a number of officials of the government and private agencies concerned, they discussed raising the level of municipal services in all areas, road signs for internal roads, as well as the roads leading to the governorate through the Wilayat of Thamrait, and the coastal road through the Wilayat of Shaleem and Al Halaniyat Islands, and the readiness of all the proposed sites to host the events and activities accompanying the tourist season in the Wilayat of Salalah.

They also looked into the availability of sufficient numbers of policemen to regulate traffic on all roads leading to the governorate, securing green spaces, beaches with rescue teams, maintaining security and safety for everyone.

In the field of health services, they discussed extending the period of working hours in some health centres to accommodate the increase in visitors resulting from the influx of tourists to the governorate. They stressed on the importance of strengthening the medical staff in the Wilayat of Salalah, health points, emergency centres, heart centre, availability of adequate medicines and mobile medical services (ambulances) on the Adam-Thamrait line as well as in border stations.

Facilities

The readiness of housing and accommodation was also reviewed in terms of availability, level of service and ability to accommodate visitors. Besides, ensuring the provision of all food supplies in Salalah and the governorate’s wilayats that citizens and tourists need, monitoring their prices to prevent exploitation and working to provide car rental offices in some places to facilitate the process of movement and parking. Also, the authorities discussed assisting small and medium enterprises to open marketing outlets. They reviewed the readiness of telecommunications companies, electricity companies, roads leading to tourist sites in the governorate, and support them with equipment for any emergency.

Earlier, the Dhofar Municipality announced that the events and activities of the khareef season for this year will be held at various locations such as parks, gardens, natural and tourist sites.

It said that the distribution of events came with the aim of attracting the largest number of tourists and introducing the tourist sites and landscapes in the governorate.

It said that the municipality’s entertainment centre, where the Salalah Tourism Festival activities and events were usually held, will be closed due to the fact that it is undergoing comprehensive development work, in order to meet the aspirations of citizens and tourists.
