MUSCAT: Talented young Omani rally driver Abdullah al Rawahi has set himself a challenging target of finishing in podium position at the Jordan International Rally, the fourth round of Middle East Rally Championship (Merc) from May 19 to 21.

Al Rawahi on Skoda Fabia R5 with Jordanian co-driver Atta al Hmoud is currently ranked third in overall Merc standings after retiring from his last rally in Kuwait.

Abdullah was forced for an early retirement in Kuwait due to technical problem and engine overheating of the car.

The rally consists of 12 stages in Jordan River and Dead Sea area, where three stages will be repeated two times on Friday. The remaining three stages will be repeated two times also on Saturday.

Abdullah, who have 54 points in the Merc championship, is sponsored by Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth and Sohar International and Al Manar Financial investments and Motel.

Al Rawahi said he will do his best efforts to come back with good result from Jordan.

"I am looking forward to the start of the rally. I have good knowledge of the Jordan terrain and stages. My Jordanian co-driver Atta al Hmoud's support is important for this big championship like this.”

ZAKARIYA PULLS OUT

Meanwhile, Zakariya al Amri, another Omani driver who had registered for the rally, had to withdraw from the rally due to lack of financing and support to this participation in Jordan.

"Unfortunately, I'm short of funds and support for the participation in Jordan International Rally. My car needs a lot of accessories and parts during the rally," Al Amri said.
