Sur earn third ticket to Omantel League

Muscat: Sur club earned the third ticket to the 2022-23 Omantel League as they defeated Al Khabourah 1-0 in the play-off late on Friday.


At the Seeb Stadium, Sur’s Al Asim al Harthi scored the most important goal in the 105th minute during first extra-half. He converted the penalty to deliver a thrilling win for his team and seal a place in the top-tier league next season.


The regulation time ended in a goalless draw.


Coach Salim Sultan’s men got an advantage as Al Khabourah’s player Saif al Dhabari received a red card in the first extra-half.


Salim Sultan hailed Sur’s progress to Omantel League. “The squad showed top performance during the whole league matches including the play-off game against Al Khabourah. Promotion to the top-tier league was our top aim since the beginning of the season and we are very proud with accomplishing this target,” he said after the match.


The national coach affirmed that presence of Al Oruba and Sur to Omantel League will add further technical value to the league’s performance. “It was great occasion as both teams Al Oruba and Sur advanced to Omantel League and their attendance in the top-tier league will bring further competitions to the rest of teams besides the awaiting derby between both teams,” he concluded.


Al Bashayer and Al Oruba clubs had confirmed their promotion to Omantel League after topping their respective groups. Sur club joined them as third promoted club.


On the other hand, three clubs from Omantel League will drop into first division league next season. The relegation zone currently featured many teams including Saham, Bahla, Nizwa, Al Ittihad and Muscat. In the forthcoming rounds, the identity of the nearest teams for relegation will be unveiled.
