OHA set for 2022 Women’s Asia Cup

Muscat: The Oman Hockey Association (OHA) is gearing up to host the 2022 Women’s Asia Cup which will begin on Friday at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex.


The OHA will unveil the theme of the tournament in a function at Al Marooj Grand Hotel on Wednesday. The Asian event will be hosted in the Sultanate of Oman for first time in history and eight teams will vie for the title including China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.


The Women’s Asia Cup is one of the oldest Asian hockey events that started since 1985. The first title of the championship was won by South Korea. They were the title holders in 1993 and 1999. China entered to the champions list in 1989 and also won the prestigious cup in 2009.


India emerged champions in 2004 while the Japan earned the title in 2007 and 2013.


India are the defending champions as they won the title in 2017. The assignment will be tough for the Indian women's team to defend the title in Muscat. The latest participation for the title holders was in 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo as they ended in fourth place.



OMAN TEAM LAUNCH


The Asian event will feature official launch of the Oman women's hockey team that will take place on January 25. As many as 26 women players from the Sultanate of Oman are undergoing their first internal training camp. The warm-up camp will feature some basic training and the fundamental coaching skills. The event will include also many training programmes for the domestic women including coaching, umpiring and other courses. The team players will attend and watch the matches of the Asian tournament during January 21 to 28.


For the Asian Cup, all the teams have arrived in Muscat. Japan were the first team to arrive and are involved in a short preparatory camp. The training sessions of the teams are taking places at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex and hockey ground at Seeb club.


A press conference will take place on Wednesday in presence of Asian Hockey Federation officials and the organising committee beside the team manager of the participated teams.
