IBRA: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, marked the Tree Day which falls on October 31 each year, at the premises of Al Sharqiyah University, on Sunday.

The celebration was held under the auspices of Shaikh Ali bin Ahmed al Shamsi, Governor of North Al Dakhiliyah Governorate.

Addressing the event, Engineer Salim bin Saud al Kindi, Director-General Agriculture and Water Resources in North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, said that the celebration aims to encourage the community to preserve and increase trees and also to raise awareness of the importance of the tree for humans and animals and its role in the environment in terms of vitality and aesthetics. It also aims to emphasize the role of trees in curbing desert encroachment and reducing global warming.

Al Kindi pointed out that trees are affected by climatic changes and natural disasters in the world, adding that deforestation, fires and urban sprawl have contributed significantly to desertification and the decline of green areas.

Al Kindi emphasized the need to review regulations and legislation in order to protect trees and find comprehensive programmes to expand the green area and maintain the ecological balance. — ONA
