

MUSCAT: Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Saeedi, Minister of Health, participated in the virtual High-level Side Event held on the Margins of the United Nations High-level Political Forum (HLPF), ‘Accelerating Progress towards the Health-Related SDGs in a Time of Crisis: Solutions for an Equitable and Resilient Recovery.
The Sultanate has been selected due to its international health status in the region.
The event focused on key acceleration solutions in support of country leadership and community engagement and in particular the role of primary health in driving Covid-19 recovery, while boosting resilience to future shocks and enhancing health security, a focus on equity, including the importance of disaggregated data and multi-sectoral action to reach those who must not be left behind and the relevance of collaboration to accelerate Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) progress.
The event highlighted leadership by countries and regions and showcased how these could be further scaled through the support of WHO and its multilateral partners in and beyond the SDGs Global Action Plan. The event also focused on the reasons health is relevant across the SDGs and why multilateral collaboration is key to overcome the pandemic, improve health security and accelerate progress to deliver on our vision to achieve healthy lives and well-being for all by 2030.
The Minister of Health spoke about the importance of achieving the 10th goal of the Sustainable Development Goals, concerning reducing inequality and disparities to ensure equitable access to basic services and universal health coverage, as well as financial protection.
The minister added that addressing the sixteenth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals by promoting peace, justice and strengthening institutions will have a positive impact on the health and well-being of individuals, and thus increase the prosperity and productivity of populations.
