As many as 25 oxygen cylinders and other medical emergency materials were sourced by the expatriates from the Indian state of Kerala for the state.

These compressed units of lifesaving materials were collected as part of 'Care for Kerala', a government initiative under the umbrella of Norka Roots.

The initiative is part of the ongoing support to India and the state, as sending the collected items has become easy following exemption on import duties on medical equipment, medicines and medical supplies under the prevailing covid-19 pandemic situation in the country.

Accordingly, a committee was formed under the chairmanship of PM Jabir, Director, Norka Roots, an organisation set up to address the issues of migrant Keralites.

'Care for Kerala' group has a vast support base. It has decided to continue sourcing medical equipment and other materials needed for relief amid the pandemic.

"We are collecting essential and lifesaving equipment as the Indian state governments or bodies appointed by the state governments are authorised to procure, collect or receive medical relief from individuals, corporate, associations and NGOs from overseas countries," PM Jabir, who is also the head of Community Welfare wing of Indian Social Club, said.

On behalf of the Government of Kerala, the official consignee for receiving the medical relief material from Overseas would be the Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL), a Government of Kerala entity.

KMSCL will initiate steps to distribute the medical relief with hospitals or beneficiaries as per the requirement of the Covid-19 task force set up by the government of Kerala.

A Special Task Force under IAS officers, Dr Ellangovan Principal Secretary (Industries & NORKA), Dr S Karthikeyan, V R Krishna Teja Mylavarapu, Vigneshwari, and Norka Roots CEO Shri Hari Krishnan

Namboothiri, has been assigned by the state to monitor the facilitation and distribution of medical relief from overseas.

Care for Kerala is an initiative by NRIs in Gulf countries supported by Norka Roots to seek support from potential sponsors who could contribute towards the mission.
