Oman take on South Korea in Asian handball meet

SUWON, South Korea: Oman will play against hosts South Korea in the Group 1 main round match of the 18th Asian Men’s Handball Championship in Suwon, South Korea, on Monday. Oman qualified to the main round after finishing second in Group B behind Bahrain with two points. Oman lost to Bahrain 23-30 in their second match on Saturday, but had collected two points from their opening 33-19 win against debutants Australia. Other teams in the Group 1 include Iran and Saudi Arabia. The Group 2 includes Japan, UAE, Bahrain and Qatar. The top two will qualify for the semifinals after the round-robin matches.


A total of 14 teams are taking part in the championship that also serves as the Asian Qualifiers for the 2019 World Men’s Handball Championship. The top-four teams in Suwon will make it to the worlds. Oman meet Saudi Arabia on Tuesday and conclude group fixture with a match against Iran on Wednesday. Salalah to host Asian youth tourney Salalah will host the Asian Men’s Youth Handball Championship 2018 from July 8 to 20 after the Oman Handball Association won the hosting rights. The decision was approved during the Asian Handball Federation meeting on the sidelines of the Asian handball meet in Suwon on Friday. The biennial youth championship also serves as the qualifying tournament for the Youth World Championship. The last edition of the tournament was held in Manama, Bahrain, in 2016 where the hosts won the title.
