Munawarah, owned by Mohammed bin Rashid al Darai, claimed first place in the opening round with a time of 4 minutes 41.21 seconds as the Oman Shell-sponsored camel racing programme for the 2026-27 season continued in Al Dhahirah Governorate on Thursday.
The races were held under the auspices of Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdullah al Busaidi, Wali of Ibri.
The competitions were held at the Saih Al Masarat Camel Racing Track under the supervision of the Oman Camel Racing Federation, as part of the ongoing season's programme.
The event featured races for Hagayeg (two-year-old) camels over a distance of 3 km, followed by competitions for Lagaya (three-year-old) camels over 4 km.
The programme brought together camel owners and participants from across the governorate, highlighting the continued interest in traditional camel racing.
The races were organised as part of Oman Shell's support for camel racing activities in its concession areas, reflecting the company's ongoing contribution to preserving Oman's traditional sports and supporting the local community.
RCC TO BUY 10 CAMELS
On another note, the Royal Court Affairs, represented by the Royal Camel Corps (RCC), will purchase 10 camels during the fourth stage of the 2026-27 camel racing season, scheduled at Al Felaij Racecourse in Barka from November 8 to 12.
The purchases include five Hagayeg (two-year-old), three Lagaya (three-year-old) and two Edaa (four-year-old) camels, in support of Oman's traditional camel racing sport.
Organised by the Oman Camel Racing Federation (OCRF), with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth (MoCSY), the five-day event will feature 87 races across six age categories, including human-rider races, with distances ranging from 2 km to 6 km.
The fourth stage will also feature qualifying rounds for the final of His Majesty the Sultan's Camel Racing Cup.
