MUSCAT, NOV 4

The Sports Psychology Workshop, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, concluded on Wednesday after two days of sessions held on November 3 and 4 at the Intercity Hotel Muscat.

The workshop was organised by the Directorate General of Sports Care and Development, represented by the Department of Sports Medicine and Science, and featured Algerian sports professor and lecturer Youssef Harrache.

The first session focused on the history and development of sports psychology, its concepts, objectives and fields, as well as its main and contemporary approaches.

The second session addressed the psychological preparation of athletes. Topics included mental preparation, mental training, psychological skills, the stages of psychological preparation and the factors influencing its effectiveness. The role of sports psychologists in supporting athletes was also discussed.

The third session focused on personality in sports, covering personality concepts, components, characteristics and influencing factors. It also examined personality theories, the distinctive traits of athletes and successful coaches, and the role of sports in shaping and developing personality.

The workshop highlighted the importance of sports psychology as an essential component of athlete development, particularly in promoting mental well-being, strengthening psychological skills and helping athletes cope with the pressures and challenges of competition.

The programme forms part of the ministry's efforts to develop national sports personnel and strengthen the integration of physical and psychological preparation, contributing to improved athlete welfare and performance.

Huda bint Salim al Ghailani, Head of the Psychological Care Section at the Department of Sports Medicine and Science, highlighted the importance of sports psychology in athlete development.

“Sports psychology plays a key role in promoting mental well-being, developing mental abilities and helping athletes cope with competitive pressures,” she said.

“The workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to understand athletes' psychological needs and apply appropriate scientific methods to assess and support them,” Al Ghailani added.

“We hope its outcomes will strengthen the integration of physical and psychological preparation and contribute to improving athletes' well-being and performance,” she concluded.
