The Ahmed Zabana National Museum in Oran, Algeria, hosted a retrospective exhibition titled 'Between Light and the Mediterranean Sea... Feelings in Colours' by Algerian visual artist Malika Nakkach, also known as Kouskousa.
Nakkach's works blend artistic tradition with modern expression, celebrating Algeria's cultural identity, heritage and natural beauty. Her paintings explore the country's coastal landscapes, traditional architecture, historic landmarks and everyday life.
Using vivid, warm colours, the artist captures the distinctive Mediterranean atmosphere of western Algeria, particularly the beaches, seascapes and urban landscapes of Oran and its surroundings.
Blue, in its various shades, dominates the exhibition, reflecting the artist's strong connection with the sea and sky of her coastal hometown.
Her paintings feature prominent historical sites and neighbourhoods, including the old Derb and Sidi El Houari districts, Santa Cruz Fortress and Mers El Kébir. Other works depict the Bay of Algiers, traditional markets, popular gatherings and rural landscapes, offering glimpses of Algeria's social and cultural life.
Drawing primarily on Impressionism, Nakkach combines academic precision with expressive brushwork, using light, colour and movement to interpret her subjects. Her approach brings together realistic architectural details and impressionistic treatments of coastal scenery and changing weather.
Oil on canvas is her principal medium, allowing her to create rich layers of colour, depth and texture. Bold and spontaneous brushstrokes further enhance the sense of movement and atmosphere in her landscapes.
The exhibition offers visitors an artistic journey through Algeria's Mediterranean identity, bringing together its natural beauty, architectural heritage and everyday cultural traditions. — ONA
