MUSCAT, OCT 31

The Oman Cancer Association’s 22nd annual walkathon saw a gathering of over 6,000 participants at Al Qurum Natural Park under the slogan “Walk with Hope” on October 30, 2026, highlighting the message of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which advocates for early detection, education, and patient support.

The awareness campaign, held for two days at Al Qurum Natural Park in Muscat, was a strong demonstration of community solidarity with cancer patients, survivors, and their families.

The event was held under the auspices of Azzan bin Qasim al Busaidi, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism for Tourism, and brought together individuals, families, government representatives, private-sector organisations, diplomats, healthcare professionals, volunteers, and supporters in a shared effort to promote cancer awareness, encourage early detection, and support those affected by cancer.

The association reaffirmed that the success of the walkathon demonstrates the power of community collaboration and shared responsibility in supporting cancer patients and their families. The OCA remains committed to advancing cancer awareness, prevention, early detection, palliative care, and patient support services across the Sultanate of Oman.

For the first time, this year's walkathon was organised over two days, October 29 and 30, in response to requests from community members who have participated in the event year after year. "The expanded format provided greater opportunities for public engagement, family participation, and community activities, further strengthening the walkathon's position as one of the association's flagship annual initiatives," said officials at the OCA.

"The strong turnout reflected the continued commitment of the Omani community to cancer awareness and the importance of collective action in addressing the disease," said Dr Waheed al Kharousi, OCA Chairperson.

The programme featured a variety of activities designed to engage participants of all ages, including stage performances, a dedicated children’s corner, and a food section, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for families and the wider community.

Through the annual walkathon, the OCA seeks to encourage individuals to take an active role in cancer prevention and early detection while helping build a more supportive and informed society, explained Dr Manal al Zedjali, Secretary-General of the Oman Cancer Association.

Dr Zahid al Mandhari explained how the two-day event ensured children had their own fun on the first day. He noted, "It was truly an opportunity for kids to go out, have fun, and exercise. That is one of our most important messages, as being physically active is one of the best ways to prevent cancer. This is a good way to encourage children to be active." Across both days, the mobile mammogram unit of the OCA was parked at the venue to conduct screenings.
