Muscat: The Ministry of Energy and Minerals has issued a policy requiring the designation of an "Energy Efficiency Officer" within high-energy-consuming institutions.
This initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance energy efficiency in the Sultanate of Oman and reduce energy consumption and waste, improve operational efficiency, and support the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, as well as the national commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The policy seeks to foster effective energy management in high-consumption entities by mandating the appointment of a qualified Omani professional as an Energy Efficiency Officer. This individual will be responsible for monitoring consumption rates, analyzing data, identifying opportunities for efficiency improvements, overseeing the implementation of relevant plans and initiatives, and measuring outcomes—all of which contribute to enhanced performance and lower operational costs.
Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, emphasized that improving energy efficiency is a cornerstone for the development of the energy sector in the Sultanate of Oman. He noted that the expansion of electricity production and the diversification of energy sources must be complemented by effective consumption management, which in turn strengthens energy security, optimizes resource utilization, and supports sustainable economic growth.
His said that the policy of designating an "Energy Efficiency Officer" aims to embed energy management within institutional responsibilities. This is achieved by empowering qualified national personnel to monitor energy consumption, analyze relevant data, and identify opportunities for efficiency improvements. He emphasized that the success of this policy requires the commitment of the management teams within the affected organizations, as well as the integration of energy efficiency into their operational plans and investment decisions—viewing it as a strategic opportunity to enhance performance, reduce costs, and boost competitiveness.
