LONDON: Stephen Doughty, UK Minister of State for the Middle East, affirmed that the Royal visit of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to the United Kingdom celebrates centuries of deeply rooted ties. In an interview with the Oman News Agency (ONA), Doughty noted that the official reception and state banquet hosted by King Charles III reflected the profound depth of these historic relations.
Doughty emphasised that a central pillar of the "exceptional" visit is economic, as His Majesty’s ambitious vision for Oman closely aligns with the UK’s agenda for economic growth and modern technology. The visit focuses heavily on strategic minerals, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, and space technology, with new bilateral partnerships being forged across these domains.
To strengthen future-focused people-to-people ties, the minister announced the resumption of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship programme for Omani students. Discussions also centred on university-level collaboration in renewable energy, AI, and space, positioning both nations to provide global leadership in cutting-edge industries.
Addressing regional security, Doughty highlighted Oman’s diplomatically vital role amid ongoing Middle Eastern tensions. Having stood side by side through decades of turbulence, the UK and Oman continue intensive defence and security collaboration while maintaining joint diplomatic efforts to resolve regional and global challenges. Doughty commended Oman’s long-standing ability to keep channels of communication open among diverse nations.
A primary focus remains maritime security and enhanced information-sharing to protect the free flow of trade and uphold freedom of navigation. Doughty noted that regional disruptions impact not only Middle Eastern economies but also the UK and the wider global economy. The two nations will continue working closely within international institutions, such as the United Nations, to advance peaceful, diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts.
Doughty concluded by stressing the expansion of broader economic ties through the impending GCC-UK Free Trade Agreement. Bringing this agreement to its final stages, alongside establishing new strategic partnerships, remains essential for securing shared economic interests, regional stability, and long-term prosperity for both nations.
