MUSCAT, OCT 20

Omani handball referees will take part in two international competitions in Pakistan and Thailand, strengthening the country’s presence on the international officiating stage and highlighting the continued development of national refereeing talent.

The International Handball Federation (IHF) has selected continental referees Al Zahraa al Maashari and Lamia al Saadi to officiate at the IHF Trophy for Youth, which will be held in Faisalabad, Pakistan, from November 4 to 9.

The appointment marks another important step in the development of the Omani refereeing duo, providing an opportunity to gain further international experience and officiate matches in a competition featuring teams from different backgrounds and levels of competition.

The tournament will be the pair’s second international assignment since receiving their continental refereeing badges in May 2025. Their first overseas appointment was at the IHF Trophy in Bangladesh.

Their latest selection reflects the progress they have made since earning their continental qualifications and the importance of providing Omani referees with opportunities to develop their expertise through participation in international competitions. It also highlights the growing opportunities for Omani women officials to gain experience and establish themselves in the sport’s international refereeing community.

HANDBALL CHALLENGE TROPHY

Meanwhile, continental referees Mutasim al Dughaishi and Muntasir al Dughaishi left Oman on Sunday for Bangkok, Thailand, where they will officiate at the Handball Challenge Trophy from October 19 to November 2.

The duo received their nomination from the IHF, securing an opportunity to contribute to another international competition and further develop their officiating experience.

Their participation will expose them to the technical and professional demands of international matches, where decision-making, concentration and consistent application of the rules are essential. The assignment also provides an opportunity to exchange experience with officials from other countries and strengthen their ability to manage matches at a competitive level.

The appointments of both Omani refereeing teams underline the importance of continued investment in referee development and international exposure. Regular participation in overseas competitions enables officials to refine their skills, gain confidence and maintain the standards required for international handball.

The selections also reflect the efforts of the Oman Handball Association to support national refereeing talent and expand its representation at regional and international events. By facilitating opportunities for both male and female officials, the association continues to contribute to the development of Omani handball officiating and strengthen its presence on the international stage.
