MUSCAT: Oman is preparing to showcase clean energy, recycling and conservation initiatives at next month’s COP31 climate conference in Türkiye, as it seeks to strengthen international partnerships supporting its environmental and economic goals.

The conference will take place in Antalya from November 9 to 20, with discussions focused on implementing climate commitments, expanding climate finance and strengthening resilience to climate change.

The Environment Authority is coordinating Oman’s preparations through teams responsible for negotiations, the national pavilion, youth engagement, innovation and other activities.

Oman’s participation will highlight progress in developing a circular economy, protecting biodiversity and attracting investment in natural assets, alongside its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Investments linked to nature reserves have exceeded RO 44 million through nine contracts covering seven reserves, according to figures outlined in the announcement. Oman had 32 nature reserves in 2025, spanning approximately 187,276 square kilometres.

The country is also pursuing blue carbon projects targeting the planting of 100 million mangrove trees across 20,000 hectares. These initiatives are expected to absorb about 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, although the announcement did not specify a timeframe.

In waste management, the volume of recycled municipal solid waste reached 1.77 million tonnes, supported by 85 recycling facilities. The announcement reported nationwide coverage of waste collection and transport services and a 100 per cent rate of safe solid waste management.

Marine protected areas now account for 16.19 per cent of Oman’s exclusive economic zone, compared with a baseline of 0.33 per cent, exceeding the country’s target for 2030.

Oman also rose six places to 49th in the 2026 Environmental Performance Index, from 55th in 2024. It ranked first in six sub-indicators, including wastewater treatment, species habitat protection and progress in reducing sulphur dioxide emissions, the announcement said.

The delegation will use the conference to present Oman’s sustainability initiatives and explore cooperation in finance, technology and expertise to support national climate priorities and Oman Vision 2040. — ONA
