MUSCAT: Cargo handled at Oman’s ports rose to about 146 million tonnes in the first eight months of 2026, up from 90.5 million tonnes a year earlier, as vessel arrivals, container traffic and vehicle shipments increased, according to the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology.
Container throughput rose 20.5 per cent to more than 4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), compared with 3.37 million TEUs in the corresponding period of 2025, Laila bint Ali al Batashi, Director of the Ports and Maritime Docks Department, said.
The number of vessels calling at ports and maritime docks outside port boundaries increased 27.9 per cent to more than 11,000, from 8,793 a year earlier.
Vehicle handling recorded the strongest growth among the indicators reported, rising 182.6 per cent to 188,368 vehicles from 66,661.
Al Batashi said the increases reflected stronger activity across the port network and reinforced its role in supporting trade, supply chains and logistics services.
The figures point to rising demand for Oman’s maritime facilities, with growth extending across containerised goods, cargo volumes and vehicle movements.
Ports are a central component of Oman’s efforts to expand its logistics industry and strengthen commercial links with regional and international markets. — ONA
