JEDDAH: Oman head coach Tarik Sektioui pointed out that his side faced a decisive challenge against Kuwait in the final Group A match of the Gulf Cup 27, with the need to score as many goals as possible and Kuwait's early goal adding to the pressure.
“Oman recovered from 1-0 down to secure a 3-1 victory and keep their qualification hopes alive.”
“The match was one that we had to win. We needed to score as many goals as possible, and Kuwait’s goal made things difficult for us. However, we created many chances and managed to score,” Sektioui said.
The Moroccan coach also addressed criticism of his squad selections, stressing that his decisions were made with the interests of Omani football in mind.
“I came here to serve Oman football. I work without selfishness and accept criticism from the media over the players I have not selected, but my choices are always made with a clear conscience.”
ARNOLD QUESTIONS DRAW OF LOTS
Meanwhile, Iraq coach Graham Arnold questioned the use of a draw of lots to determine the second qualifying spot from Group A after his team and Oman finished level on points and several other criteria.
Iraq lost 2-0 to Saudi Arabia in their final group match, while Oman defeated Kuwait 3-1. Oman subsequently secured the second semifinal place after the draw of lots.
“We have to follow the Fifa regulations,” Arnold said, arguing that Iraq’s higher position in the world rankings should be taken into consideration. Iraq are ranked 63rd in the world, while Oman are 80th.
“I believe our level is higher than Oman’s and our ranking is higher. If we want to be fair, we should follow the rules. We will see what happens, but I do not think it would be fair if we do not qualify,” he said.
“Saudi Arabia played well, while we made a number of mistakes that cost us dearly,” he said, adding that several injured players were expected to return after two days.
DONIS PRAISES SAUDI SPIRIT
Saudi Arabia coach Georgios Donis, meanwhile, praised his players’ fighting spirit and the support of the Green Falcons’ fans after the victory over Iraq.
“My team created dangerous chances despite not enjoying much possession. We are concerned over injuries to some players, including that of left-back Zakariya Hawsawi.”
Kuwait coach Helio Sousa said: “Out long-term objective was to build a team capable of competing for titles, urging observers to look beyond immediate results.”
Kuwait midfielder Yousef al Haqan highlighted that “the team aimed to deliver better performances and results in the future.”
Oman secured second place in Group A and advanced to the semifinals after defeating Kuwait 3-1 in the final round, finishing level on points with Iraq before winning the draw.
Saudi Arabia had already secured qualification after the second round and went on to finish top of the group with a perfect nine points.
