US President Donald Trump has backed industry self-regulation over government rules in the face of accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) development.
Trump met with leaders of AI companies in Washington on Tuesday, including Anthropic's Dario Amodei, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg.
Following the meeting, he told reporters the group had agreed to voluntary oversight standards.
"This is going to be all for the good, and we're going to have it be nice and safe. And they're really going to be policing each other, and that's the way it works," Trump said.
Zuckerberg said a set of principles and commitments around internal controls and auditing had been drafted.
Recently, following independent hacking attacks by AI agents, leading labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI have favoured slowing the development of AI, seeing a risk that the technology could slip out of human control.
Amodei repeated his stance that AI had both immense benefits and risks.
"The mechanism how we address those risks is still under discussion. But we all need to work. We all need to work together to make sure that we can win, and we can win safely. If we, if we do this right, if we work with the president and everyone here, we can win safely."
